Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science
are all-day conferences that are held every year
for 6th - 12th grade girls. The official
objectives of EYH conferences are: to foster
awareness of the wide range of career options
for women in mathematics, to provide
opportunities to meet and talk with women who
work in these fields, and to increase young
women's awareness of the importance of math and
the need for early career exploration. EYH
offers workshops in a variety of subjects such
as forensic science, nutrition, mathematical
games, environmental archaeology, and cellular
biology. These are really good because they are
interesting applications of
|
science and math that may get girls excited about
learning the theory behind them. There are three basic
types of workshops: hands-on, where the girls actively
participate; career, where women discuss their carrers;
and guidance, pertaining to college or career choices.
This gives girls positivewomen role models in
non-traditional careers. There are also workshops for
parents, teacher, and counselors to help them become
aware of girls' capabilities in math and science and to
give them good guidance in career choices. The workshop
are all taught by volunteer college foculty or women
professionals.
EYH conferences are held across the country every
year. Locally, Sonoma State University will hold a
conference on March 28 of this year specifically or 7th
and 8th grade girls. Like many other outreach programs,
this one focuses on middle school girls because middle
school is when many girls stop being interested in math
and science and encounter a variety of social pressures
that drive them away from math and science. San Jose
State University will hold a conference on March. 14 for
6th - 12th graders. EYH events are sponsored by the
Math/Science network and by a number of corporations and
government associations.
